  • Candye Kane, "Whole Lotta Love" (RUF Records)
    From the Chicago Sun Times
    By Jim DeRogatis

One-of-a-kind blues belter Candye Kane returns to one of her strengths on her latest collection of high-energy, boundlessly cheerful, mildly risque bedroom rompers: Challenging the stereotypes of an anorexia-obsessed society that maintains that a BBW (big beautiful woman) can't be a sultry, sexy presence.

With a spirit and personality as large as her voice, Kane leads an assembly of studio pros (including blues great Charlie Musselwhite) through a collection of well-chosen covers that she thoroughly claims as her own, including the Willie Dixon by way of Led Zeppelin title track, Billy Valentine's "Fit, Fat and Fine" and Carole King's "Wrap Around Joy."

Just as rewarding are a handful of original gems--"A Lion in My House," "I'm Just a Sucker Who Believes in Love"--which serve as prime showcases for Kane's sharp wit and indomitable worldview. "I'm not getting older/I'm getting better/And I plan to keep it that way," she sings in the concluding track, and we're all the luckier for it
